How Fast is Vodafone's 36 Mbps Fibre Package?

Simultaneous Streaming

Simultaneous Streaming

Simultaneous streaming is to the ability to stream content to multiple devices or users at the same time. Households often have more than one person using the internet at the same time.  The largest use of bandwidth is video. This 36 Mbps Vodacom  package allows you to simultaneously stream video to one device or person at a time. That’s perfect for single person households.

Speed Down

4.5 GB download

Vodafone mentions that it takes 18 minutes to download a 4.5GB movie on this package. We’ve calculated that on the top speed of 36 Mbps, it would take 16 minutes and 40 seconds. However, on their stated 18 Mpbs guarantee it would take a bit longer: around 33 minutes and 20 seconds. That’s quite a wait, but if it’s streaming it shouldn’t be an issue.

Upload 250 MB of photos

At 9 Mbps upload speed, it takes around 4 minutes to upload 250 Mbs worth of photos. If you’re an avid photographer and upload multiple GBs worth of data at a time this might be very time-consuming and you may need to look for a better pacakge.

What can you do with 36 Mpbs?

Let’s look in detail at what this package can offer you with day-to-day examples.

Streaming Video in Standards and High-definition

According to Netflix, you use about 1GB of data per hour for streaming a TV show or movie in standard definition and up to 3GB of data per hour when streaming HD video. That would mean you can download the whole show in standard definition in around 3-4 minutes; and in high definition in around 11-12 minutes. In short, streaming shows on Netflix, Amazon and similar services is no problem for this fibre package.

Downloading Games

Games vary in download size. To download something like “Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War”, which is 250 GB, would take a whopping 15 and half hours to download. Something smaller like Final Fantasy 15 – 148GB – would take a shorter 9 hours and 10 minutes. If you’re not a fan of getting shuteye between playing new games, you might want to upgrade your fibre package to something with higher bandwidth.

Use video conferencing and online collaboration tools

With videoconferencing tools like Teams and Zoom, you end up using both the upload and download bandwidth in equal measure. The inbound streaming is around 1.2 Mbps and one outbound streaming is also around 1.2 Mbps. With broadband packages, the bandwidth isn’t always symmetrical, so that can be an issue occasionally, but not with this Full Fibre 1 and Pro II Full Fibre 1 Package. You easily have 5-6 people on Teams calls without running into issues. So this is ideal for the average person working at home. That said, if you’re a company you might want more bandwidth to serve multiple users.

Browsing the web

No problems here. Provided there’s no heavy streaming or downloading going on in the background, you should be able to browse the web without any delays.

Vodafone Fibre Broadband Key Developments

Vodafone UK network launched on the 1st of January 1985 under it’s then parent company Rascal Electronics Group. Vodafone was the first company in the UK to be awarded a cellular telephone licence, so a real trend setter right from the start. The table below shows the brief history of Vodafone

Key Facts

Available in 8 Million Homes

Vodafone serves more than 18 million mobile and fixed-line customers in the UK. To help deliver Gigabit UK, their full-fibre broadband roll-out programme now covers 26 UK towns and cities, rising to 35 over the coming months, through partnerships with CityFibre and Openreach. Their full fibre services are now available to more than eight million homes across the UK (one eighth of the UK ‘s total population)

Pioneering in Tech

We have a strong track record as a tech pioneer, making the UK’s first mobile phone call, sending the first text message, and making the UK’s first live holographic call using 5G in 2018. We were also the first to start carrying live 5G traffic from a site in Salford, Greater Manchester. As of March 2022, we have 5G in 380 locations across Europe – 141 in the UK and 239 across Germany, Spain, Italy and Ireland. Our 4G network coverage currently reaches over 99% of the UK population.

Partnerships in Fibre Provision

To make Full Fibre available to more homes than any other provider, Vodafone has created a unique combination of partnerships with CityFibre and Openreach. Vodafone’s latest deal with CityFibre, announced in November 2021 establishes it as CityFibre’s anchor customer, making long-term, volume commitments across CityFibre’s entire roll-out as part of its £4bn investment programme. It marks Vodafone’s continued support for the expansion of Full Fibre networks across the UK and determination to encourage wholesale infrastructure competition in the market.
