Switching to Virgin Media

Everything you need to know about joining Virgin Media and getting connected to the UK's fastest widely-available broadband.

Why Is Switching to Virgin Different?

Short version: Virgin Media runs its own cable network, separate from Openreach. You can't just swap providers like you would going from BT to Sky—Virgin needs to physically connect you to their infrastructure.

What this means practically: An engineer will visit to install a small connection box and run coax cable to your router location. This takes 1-2 hours. If your property had Virgin before and the cabling is intact, it's quicker. You'll receive a Hub 5 router with most packages.

The payoff: Virgin's cable network delivers faster speeds than most Openreach FTTC connections, and the speeds don't drop during peak evening hours when everyone's streaming.

How Do You Actually Switch?

  • Check your postcode first: About 45% of UK addresses can't get Virgin. Don't waste time comparing if it's not available.
  • Skip M125 unless budget is tight: M500 at £27.99/month with Netflix is better value than M125 at £22.99 right now.
  • Sign up online: Phone deals are usually worse. The best promos are online-only.
  • Expect an engineer visit: Self-install is rare. Budget 1-2 weeks for the appointment.
  • Don't cancel your old provider yet: Virgin installation triggers automatic cancellation through the switching process.
  • Ask about waiving the £35 setup: Often waived for new customers if you ask during signup.

What Should You Know Before Signing?

  • It's a new cable, not your phone line: Virgin runs separate coax infrastructure. Your BT line stays (or goes) independently.
  • The install box is permanent: They'll drill a small hole and mount a connection box. Renters should check with landlords.
  • Speeds are real: Unlike FTTC '67 Mbps' that delivers 40 Mbps, Virgin's advertised speeds match Ofcom test results.
  • Contract is 18 months, not 24: Shorter than BT/Sky. Early exit fees are monthly rate × remaining months.
  • O2 customers genuinely benefit: Volt bundles include free speed upgrade (M125→M250) and doubled mobile data.
  • Price doubles after contract: M500 goes from £27.99 to £56/month. Set a calendar reminder for month 17.
