How to Switch Broadband Providers

Switching broadband is easier than ever with the UK's One Touch Switch system. Here's everything you need to know about changing providers with minimal hassle.

Updated: January 2026

The One Touch Switch System

Since April 2022, switching broadband in the UK has been much simpler thanks to the One Touch Switch system regulated by Ofcom. When you sign up with a new provider, they automatically contact your old provider and arrange the entire switch for you.

You don't need to phone your old provider to cancel - just sign up with the new one and they handle everything. This has eliminated most of the hassle that used to come with switching broadband providers.

The whole process typically takes 10-14 working days from signing up to being connected with your new provider.

Important:

One Touch Switch works for most residential broadband services using the Openreach network (BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Plusnet, EE, etc.) and Virgin Media. Some smaller alternative networks may have different processes - check with your new provider.

Step-by-Step Switching Guide

1

Check Your Contract End Date

Find out when your current broadband contract ends to avoid early termination fees. Check your original contract, your online account, or contact your provider directly. If you're out of contract, you can switch penalty-free.

3

Sign Up with Your New Provider

Once you've chosen a new provider, sign up online or by phone. You'll need your address, contact details, and payment information. The new provider will handle cancelling your old service through One Touch Switch.

4

Request Number Porting (Optional)

If you want to keep your landline number, tell your new provider during sign-up. They'll arrange the transfer automatically. This works for most UK landline numbers.

5

Wait for Installation Date

Your new provider will confirm an installation date, typically 10-14 days away. If engineer installation is required, you'll need to be home. Some services activate remotely without a visit.

6

Complete the Switch

On your switch date, your new service will activate. There may be a few hours of downtime during the changeover. Set up your new router following the provider's instructions.

Avoiding Early Termination Fees

Most broadband contracts are 18-24 months. If you leave before your contract ends, you'll typically need to pay the remaining monthly fees. However, there are several ways to avoid these charges:

  • Wait for contract end: Check your contract end date and switch when you're out of contract.
  • Price rise exit: If your provider raises prices mid-contract, you have 30 days to leave penalty-free under Ofcom rules.
  • Poor service: If your provider consistently fails to deliver advertised speeds, you may be able to exit without fees.
  • New provider incentives: Some providers offer to cover your exit fees when you switch to them.

Keeping Your Phone Number

If you have a landline number you want to keep, you can transfer it to your new provider through a process called number porting.

Simply tell your new provider during sign-up that you want to keep your existing number. They'll handle the transfer as part of the switching process. This usually adds no extra time to the switch.

Note: Number porting works for geographic numbers (those starting with 01 or 02). Some non-geographic numbers may not be portable.

Minimising Downtime

With One Touch Switch, downtime is typically minimal - usually just a few hours on your switch day. However, if you can't afford any downtime, consider these options:

  • 4G/5G backup: EE and some other providers include mobile backup routers that keep you online during the switch.
  • Mobile hotspot: Use your smartphone as a temporary hotspot during any downtime.
  • Schedule wisely: If possible, schedule your switch for a day when you don't need internet critically.
Tip: Ask your new provider about their backup options during sign-up

Common Questions About Switching

Will I have downtime when switching?

With the One Touch Switch system, downtime is typically minimal - often just a few hours on switchover day. Some providers like EE offer 4G backup routers to eliminate downtime entirely.

Can I keep my phone number?

Yes! Just tell your new provider you want to keep your number and they'll arrange the transfer. This applies to landline numbers associated with your broadband.

What about early termination fees?

If you're still in contract, you may have to pay fees to leave early. However, if your provider raises prices mid-contract, you typically have 30 days to leave penalty-free under Ofcom rules.

Do I need to contact my old provider?

Usually no - the One Touch Switch system means your new provider handles cancellation. Just sign up with your new provider and they do the rest.

How long does switching take?

The typical switching timeline is 10-14 working days from sign-up to activation. Full Fibre installations may take slightly longer if engineering work is required.

What if I'm moving house?

If you're moving, you can either transfer your existing service to your new address or use it as an opportunity to switch providers. Contact your provider at least 2 weeks before moving.
