Switch from Virgin Media

Switching from Virgin Media's cable network is slightly different from switching between Openreach providers. Here's what you need to know.

Virgin Media Uses a Different Network

Virgin Media operates their own cable network, completely separate from the Openreach network used by BT, Sky, and most other providers. This means switching involves more than just changing providers.

When you switch from Virgin Media, you're also changing the physical infrastructure delivering your broadband. Your new provider will need to activate a phone line or fibre connection to your property.

If you don't currently have a phone line, your new provider may need to arrange an Openreach engineer visit to install one.

Steps to Switch from Virgin Media

  • Check Contract: Log into My Virgin Media to see your contract end date.
  • Contact Virgin: Unlike Openreach providers, you may need to contact Virgin directly.
  • Return Equipment: Virgin Media equipment must be returned within 30 days.
  • Engineer Visit: Your new provider may need to install a phone line if you don't have one.
  • Different Technology: Moving from cable to fibre/FTTC is a bigger change than provider swaps.
  • Keep Your Number: You can usually keep your phone number when switching.

Important Considerations

Speed differences: Virgin Media's fastest speeds (Gig1 at 1130 Mbps) may not be matched by Openreach providers in your area. Check what speeds are available before switching.

TV bundles: If you have Virgin TV, you'll need to arrange an alternative (Sky, streaming services, aerial) when you leave.

Equipment return: Virgin Media equipment (Hub, TV boxes) must be returned within 30 days or you'll be charged.
